House of Representatives mandate JAMB to extend registration by two weeks
On Thursday, the House of Representatives pressured the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to extend by two weeks the registration period for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination(UTME).
The decision followed the adoption of a motion on urgent public importance titled “Need to extend UTME registration by JAMB, sponsored by Hassan Shinkafi, during Thursday’s plenary in Abuja.
Moving the motion, Shinkafi noted that the UTME registration exercise, which commenced on January 15 ended on February 26, 2024, adding that, as a result of the painful economic situation in the country, many families have been constrained from registering their wards, by this deadline.
“The online registration, which constituted a setback to non-conversant candidates who anticipated examination participation, could not achieve this core objective because of the imminent deadline, which requires your legislative attention and intervention,” the lawmaker told the house.
He said without an extension of the registration, many candidates will not be able to register and participate in the examination. Shinkafi said the two-week extension will encourage parents to register their children for the UTME and it will reassure the public of their confidence in this current administration,”
The House, after the debate, mandated the relevant committees on Education and Legislative Compliance to enforce strict compliance.
