Legal Officer at Lagos Water Corporation

Lagos Water Corporation (LWC) is the primary provider of potable and safe water to over 18 million residents of Lagos State, Nigeria. Established in 1910, the Corporation has consistently worked to expand its operations to meet the increasing demand for clean water. LWC’s current total installed water production capacity is 210 million gallons per day (MGD), which falls short of the growing needs of the population. To address this gap, LWC has developed a comprehensive Master Plan aimed at increasing its production capacity to 745 MGD.

LWC continues to evolve and innovate, focusing on enhancing operational efficiency and meeting the water supply needs of the residents of Lagos. As part of this initiative, LWC is seeking qualified professionals to join its team and contribute to the Corporation’s ongoing success.

Job Title: Legal Officer (LWC10)

Job Summary

Lagos Water Corporation is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Legal Officer to provide legal advice, support, and representation to the Corporation. The ideal candidate will ensure compliance with laws and regulations, manage legal risks, and protect the Corporation’s interests in all legal matters. This role is critical to safeguarding the Corporation’s operations and reputation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Legal Advisory Services: Provide sound legal counsel on a wide range of matters affecting the Corporation, including corporate governance, contractual obligations, and regulatory compliance.
  • Litigation and Dispute Resolution: Represent the Corporation in legal proceedings, including disputes, negotiations, and settlements, while minimizing legal risks.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that the Corporation complies with applicable laws and regulatory frameworks in all its operations.
  • Corporate Governance: Assist in developing and maintaining effective corporate governance policies and procedures.
  • Risk Management: Identify legal risks and implement strategies to mitigate these risks to protect the Corporation’s interests.
  • Policy Development: Contribute to the formulation and implementation of corporate policies and procedures to ensure legal compliance.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with external legal counsel, government bodies, and regulatory agencies to support the Corporation’s interests.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from a recognized university.
  • Call to the Nigerian Bar and membership in the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
  • Minimum of 5 years of post-call experience in legal practice, preferably in the public sector or utility industry.
  • Strong knowledge of corporate law, contract law, regulatory compliance, and litigation.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and legal research tools.
